Susan's transformation

Hellloooo..thought I would share the amazing transformation of our bride Susan. She is a busy world traveler and loves make-up. We did some rich plums on her eyes and used a dramatic strip of lashes. We toned down her skin with just a tinted moisturizer and some spot concealer. The results speak for themselves. Her hair trial was a success also..they were done on 2 separate occasions so once I receive the pictures from her wedding day you will be able to see both together:)

A little color for a Formal Dance

Nicole was going to her school's formal dance and came to me for hair and make-up. She wanted something colorful and was wearing a navy dress. I did some colorful teals, greens, and navy on her eyes and just did a loose big curl on her long hair. She loved it and I loved using some color for her to dance the night away!!

Hello everyone!

I know it has been awhile since I have posted but I have been so busy I haven't had a moment to breathe. This is going to be a great bridal season and our calendar is filling up fast!

I would also like to introduce the newest member of my family who has been keeping me very busy.

This is Bentley! We adopted him from a shelter in upstate New York. He is a great pup but he is seriously keeping me on my toes!

I got an email from one of my past brides who told me that her cousin wanted to have a trial with me for her wedding. She wanted me to go in on a surprise for her. Here's how it went down. I was to only give her one morning that I had available. What she didn't know was that after her make-up trial her cousin was going to take her out to "lunch" aka her bridal shower. I did what I was told and Monica had no idea. Not only did she love her make-up trial and book us but she had an amazing bridal shower.

I love a good surprise..just don't pull one on me..lol

Donna and her crew..she said "I Do"

Here are some pictures of Donna's wedding morning in Lincoln Park. I didn't get a candid of the bride because I got a bit busy touching everyone up but I managed to snap an action shot as I left..lol. I also got a Before and After of one member of the bridal party.

All in all, Lisa and I came out for some seriously gorgeous hair and make-up on an equally gorgeous bridal party. Lisa did some hair extension work on the bride and she looked amazzzzzzzing. I did some icy colors on her eye matched with an icy pink lip. We did lots of fake lashes and gloss and fun was had by all.

Yay Donna! I hope your marriage is like the first day every day:)

The Powder Bar gives back!

I had the honor of getting an email from one of my favorite brides Jennifer who runs a non profit organization in the city. She was hosting an event at the Paramount Hotel in NYC for women who wanted to come and experience different vendors from yoga, massage, wine tasting, and of course make-up. I jumped at the chance and brought my artist Nicole along with me. First of all, I haven't done that many make-up applications since my days working at MAC. Our table was swamped and we were busy the entire event. We met some great people and the event was a hit.

Kirstie's wedding with my New York Team

Kirstie was a great client who wanted a distinct look and wanted to work with us from the beginning. She was going for a retro type look with tight curls and a colorful lip.

She had an early wedding out on eastern Long Island so I sent my fabu team out to beautify Kirstie and her bridal party. It was mostly up dos and blow outs (one of each featured below) but 2 girls including the bride got make-up. Here are the pics from the wedding morning..which by the way started at 6am!

A Star is Born

I had the pleasure of working with one of my favorite photographers and friend Chris Appoldt (www.christopherappoldt.com) doing some head shots for the lovely Sarah out in Eastern Long Island.

We did 2 looks, one with her hair down and soft with very natural make-up and the other with her hair pulled back with a little more make-up on the eyes. I was especially proud that I did my first updo!!! It actually turned out great. I have always been a make-up artist and brought my hair stylists with me but I decided to see what I can do and was very pleased.

Jacquelyn's Special Morning

I went down to Monroe, NJ to do Jacquelyn, her 2 bridesmaids and her mom for her wedding. First of all I LOVE LOVE LOVE her..we just hit it off instantly and I couldn't wait until her wedding day. I went to a salon to do the make-up and everyone there was so sweet. I did mostly bronzes with a shimmery pink accent. Their dresses were brown and pink.

I couldn't have asked for a better bridal party and I am doing a trial on Jacquelyn's cousin on Sunday..yay:)

Alexis's Wedding

Wow, its been so long since I have done a blog entry. I have so many wedding pics to post and first up is Alexis's wedding. Lissa Marie and I came to see Alexis and her gorgeous bridal party bright and early on a Friday morning. About a week later we received an email from one of the members of the bridal party who told us she got nothing but compliments all night long and was told that it was the best bridal hair and make-up they had ever seen...not too shabby..lol

Alexis was as calm as a cucumber and couldn't wait to say "I do". Lissa Marie and I had a great time and wish Alexis and her new husband many wonderful years together.

Emira's Wedding

I sent my artist Nicole to do Emira and her bridal party in central New Jersey a couple weeks ago.
She was such a sweet girl and I was glad we had availability for her date.

Nicole was busy with about 8 girls to do but she is such a pro that she was done with time to spare.

Erika is officially off the market!

Lisa and I were thrilled to be a part of Erika's wedding. We came to her mother's house early Saturday morning and did fabu hair and make-up for her and her bridal party. The girls were wearing a Cobalt blue bridesmaid dress so we stuck to palettes of bronzes, gold, and silvers.
The bride opted for a very neutral eye with a heavy top liner and no liner on the bottom. Her skin looked FLAWLESS and her hair was up in a classic french twist.

The bride is as calm as can be.

Nikola's trial

This is Nikola, she is one of my 2010 brides! I came to see her on Sunday afternoon and we had a great time. She isn't really a make-up wearer but she wanted to wear a fair amount of it. Her biggest fear was that she wasn't going to look like herself. I was up for the challenge:)

We did soft golden earth tones to bring out her blue eyes. She wanted a fair amount of liner so I tight lined the upper lash line and did a soft smokey line on the bottom. I just popped a couple individual fake eyelashes on the corners to make a statement without her being overwhelmed with a lot of lash. I finished off with a tinted moisturizer and concealed under the eye. We added a hint of peachy pink to the lips and Nikola couldn't believe the transformation. She booked us and decided to hire us for hair too (Will post her hair trial pictures as soon as she gets it done).

Thanks Nikola, can't wait to see you again!

Heather's Wedding

Lisa and I went to the Hyatt in Morristown on what was probably the most gorgeous weather day you could ask for to do Heather and her bridal party for her wedding.

Anne's Big Day!

I wanted to share some pictures of Anne and her girls getting ready on her wedding day. I will post some professional pictures soon but the morning was just as fun:)

We were at the Holiday Inn and there was myself doing make-up plus 3 hair girls doing hair.

I didn't get too many of the bride because she had a ton of stuff to do but I did get most of her bridal party and even one "before and after" shot.

I really love these girls..and I am soooooo happy for Anne, she is such a special person.

Jacquelyn gets her face painted:)

This is Jacquelyn. I had the honor of doing her make-up trial a couple of weeks ago the morning of her bridal shower. Her and her fiance were there and we were chatting like we had known each other for years. Of course it didn't help that she worked for a major cosmetic company and we both had a love for make-up. They are both super sweet and great conversationalists..and since I am a gabber we got along famously:)..so well that we forgot that Jacquelyn had a "surprise" bridal shower to go to where she was kind of the guest of honor..lol

We did a plum palette on Jacquelyn's eyes to bring out her eye color and brighten her face. Since Jacquelyn's face is round I did some contouring in the hollow of her cheeks with bronzer to make her face appear longer. We finished with a hint of berry on her lips and she was tinkled..well purple:)

I am looking forward to her wedding next month..this time we will have more time to chat.

Kirstie's trial with Deborah and Jessica

Kirstie is getting married next month out in eastern Long Island. She is a one in a million bride. She contacting me a couple months ago wanting hair and make-up for her wedding. At the time I only had a hair stylist available because my make-up artists were booked with other weddings we had going on. Kirstie loved our work so much she waited as I expanded my make-up team in Long Island and hired more artists to do her trial..talk about dedication!!!!

I hired Deborah..our newest make-up artist to join our LI team. I sent Deborah and Jessica, our fab hair stylist, to Kirstie's trial. Kirstie wanted that classic 1940s look and that is exactly what she got.

She booked us on the spot..I am so glad we were able to come through for her and we really appreciate her dedication to The Powder Bar.

Alexis's Trial

This is Alexis. She is getting married in the fall and she is such a great bride to work with. Lissa Marie and I came out to see her and she loved her trial. She booked us on the spot. Alexis has gorgeous hair, unfortunately her hair is PIN straight and will not take a curl. Lissa did 2 complimentary trials until we all came to a hairstyle that was realistic and something Alexis could love. She fell in love with the high fashion ponytail with braid work. Lissa did a great job!
For her make-up Alexis wanted to keep it very natural. She didn't even want to wear foundation! We settled on a light tinted moisturizer and she loved the way it looked.

We can't wait to do her wedding ..she is going to be gorgeous! Enjoy the pics!!

I thought I would stray away from the world of beauty for a minute (just a minute) and invite someone to talk about something that goes hand and hand with hair and make-up..FASHION.

While hair and makeup are absolute musts, no bridesmaid look is complete without the dress! I know from personal experience how difficult it can be to find the perfect bridesmaid dress. With so many budget and body type restrictions, it can seem impossible to find one that is cute too. Luckily, designers are taking the hint and have released some gorgeous dresses this season. One hot trend to watch is the single strap dress, which has been seen everywhere from the red carpet to the white house.

Designers have been toying with the classic design by adding chic and playful elements like bright colors, bows, and flowers.

Floral accents are a particular favorite of mine. They add a touch of girliness to an already stylish dress.

With all the different cuts and styles within this one trend, you are bound to find the perfect bridesmaid dress for your girls.

Hair and Make-up Trends: 2009 Daytime Emmy Awards

Last week I put the baby down to bed on time, sent my husband to the pool hall and sat down to watch the Daytime Emmy Awards with my 2 friends Ben & Jerry. I am not going to lie, I do self indulge in a little General Hospital on a regular basis but really I watch these boring awards for one thing..HAIR AND MAKE-UP.

Honestly this is a great tool for brides looking for trendy formal hair and make-up. Let's take a look at the trends from this years red carpet.

"The Side-Do"

This is what I call it and I absolutely love this look. Soft waves pinned loosely to the side. This look is great for the bride who opts out of a veil and chooses to use some type of hair jewelry or a flower. The look is current and ultra romantic.

"Old Hollywood Glamour"

This is a huge trend this fall..RED LIPS. We will be seeing this pop up from print to fashion week to red carpet. Soft eyeshadow with a strong black liner and a defined deep lip. There is a red lip color out there for everyone so be sure to visit your favorite counter to find out which shade is right for you. It is a look that almost anyone can pull off and it is simply glamorous.

"Big Hair"

Another trend for fall and winter is BIG HAIR. Teased at the crown with lots of spray. This look is not for the natural at heart but if you are daring enough to do this modern 80's throw back then you will be ahead of the game. Don't have enough hair to get the height? Pop in a few extensions and you will be red carpet ready.

"Smokey Eye"

Will this ever go out of style? I really hope not because its a sexy look that really make your eyes POP. Loads of black liner, dark shimmery bronzes and grays paired with fake lashes..so sultry. This look is here to stay.

"The Cat Eye????"

Ok I couldn't resist...this is what NOT to do..I mean I am all for animal rights but this is a bit overboard.

Donna's Trial

This is our bride Donna. She is getting married in November and we are tickled pink that she chose us for her wedding. Lisa and I went to her home last week for a trial. She had a previous trial with another company and did not like the results.

She wanted a little hair up but mostly down with a soft curl. Lisa put in temporary clip in extensions that were custom matched to Donna's hair. Everyone knows I am a huge fan of extensions (I wear them often) and I thought Donna's hair came out amazing.

For her make-up she wanted an "icy" look to her eyes so I used an icy pink color from MAC as her base and shaded her crease with a deeper icy pink/mauve. I topped of her eyes with a liquid liner which I winged out a bit and used a very light foundation to complement her gorgeous skin tone.
We kept that same icy pink look on the lips and added a slight glow to the cheeks. Since Donna had great lashes I just accented to the ends with a half lash strip...Gorgeous!

Heather's Trial

This is our newest bride to be... Heather. Her wedding is in a few weeks and she came to us after a disappointing trial with another beauty company. She was airbrushed and did not like the results. After spending sometime talking with her we learned Heather really wants to wear minimal make-up and wants soft romantic hair. She wants to look like her everyday self..just a little more enhanced.

Lisa used a large barrel iron and gave Heather a soft curl pinning some pieces up and letting the bangs sweep down. For her make-up I just brushed a light ivory color over the lid and used a light mauve/lavender in the outer corner. I used an eggplant color eyeshadow as liner for a soft accent on the lash line and finished her face with a tinted moisturizer, some bronzer, and a pop of bright pink on the lips.

Heather was relieved that we executed her vision and booked us for her September wedding..can't wait!

I'm Melting!!! I'm Melting!!!

Its official..we are in a heat wave. I walked out to the car yesterday and back and I was literally soaked with sweat. Now imagine a bride in her dress with 50 layers, spanx and other binding garments..not to mention her anxiety and the fact that she has to stand still under the sun and humidity and not have her make-up slide right off her face. This seems near impossible but I have decided to list my "Beat the Heat" make-up must-haves for summer brides.

Make-up Primer: I recommend Make-up Forever's HD Foundation primer or Laura Mercier's Oil Free Primer (www.sephora.com). It is lightweight and won't clog pores. It helps lock in foundation and creates a smooth base for your foundation so skin looks even, soft, and natural. Most make-up lines offer primers so if you have a favorite make-up brand then give theirs a try!

Eyelid Primer: Nothing yells sexy like an oily eyelid..NOT! This is the one complaint I hear from my clients..eyeshadow creasing. If you spent all the time "doing up your eyes" then brave the heat and humidity then you can kiss your eye make-up goodbye. Do yourself a favor and always start with a primer on your eyelids, and not concealer or foundation. Concealers stay wet and will actually help the creasing process over a period of time. One of my staple products in my make-up kit is MAC's paints (www.maccosmetics.com). it comes in a variety of colors so find one closest to your skin tone. It glides on wet but sets to a powder created a barrier to protect your eyeshadow from your natural oils. With this one simple product your eye make-up will last 8+ hours even trucking through the Mojave Desert!

Make-up Finishing Spray: This is becoming a very popular addition to my make-up application. This is a finishing spray that locks in your make-up. Just mist over your face after you finish doing your make=up and its stuck there..well without feeling like it's actually stuck there:P Its lightweight and acts almost like a hairspray for the face. The two that I have tried are Make-up Forever Mist & Fix (www.sephora.com) and the Skindinavia Finishing Spray ( www.skindinavia.com ) which guarantees your make-up lasting for 16 hours!

Waterproof/resistant Bronzer: Did you even think such a thing existed?? Well my friends it does and this is a huuuuge must have for a hot wedding day and an even hotter honeymoon;)

Jodi..My Pin-Up Bride

Jodi came to me after she had a horrific trial with a salon make-up artist. She wanted that 1940's pin-up look ( dramatic black eyeliner and fire red lips). I love doing this on brides. It is very striking and very glamorous. I often do this look on myself for events. Thanks to style icons like Gwen Stefani and Dita Von Teese many brides opt for this look.

I did very muted colors on her eyelid and used MAC's Fluidline with an angled liner brush to give her that winged out "cat-eye"

I matted out her skin with a oil free tinted moisturizer and used a very subtle blush on the apples of her cheeks. Last but not least MAC's Dubonnet red lipstick (my favorite red!!!) made the whole look come together. Her eyes really pop and she couldn't stop commenting on how almond it made her eyes look. She was thrilled and booked me for her October wedding.

Get The Look: The Girl Next Door Bride

There is a bridal look catered to everyone. Whether you are a make-up mistress or stop at chap stick everyone can look great and be comfortable in their own skin.

I created "The Girl Next Door" look for those woman who want to look natural and fresh. This make-up is geared towards the woman who only spends about 10 minutes on their face everyday. They are a no frills woman but very much feminine and flirtatious.

For the look we started with a light eye base to neutralize the eye lid and prep for eyeshadow. The eyeshadow colors consisted of matte ivory all over color and a light golden brown crease color. We accented the base of the upper and lower lash line with a waterproof black gel liner and topped it off with a natural strip of false eyelashes.

We primed the skin with a luminous primer to add a bit of glow to the skin and evened out her skin tone with a tinted moisturizer. With a concealer we brightened under the eye and under the nose and set it all with a loose translucent powder.

A little bronzer for warmth and an earthy pink to pop the cheek and brighten the complexion. The finishing touche was an everyday mauve brown lipstick and pink gloss for the lips.

This is a great timeless look that can never go wrong. After all...who doesn't want the girl next door!!!

Jessica Hupp is part of our Long Island beauty team and is a master hair stylist and make-up artist. She has been in the beauty industry for over 7 years and her work has been published in many international hair magazines and books. Aside from working in a salon for several years, she has worked aside many photographers doing hair and make-up for print and editorials.
Originally from Ohio, Jessica moved to Long Island with her friend and currently lives with her boyfriend in Suffolk County. When she isn't doing brides she is riding her jet-ski, playing volleyball, or visiting her family back in Ohio.

Cassandra's Manhatten Wedding with Nicole

My artist Nicole had the pleasure of working with Cassandra for her wedding last weekend in New York City. She did make-up services for Cassandra and 2 other women. This was our first time working with wedding planner Bianca (www.biancab.com). We hope this is the start of a beautiful working relationship.

Nicole did a great job and snapped a quick picture of the bride on her camera phone. Cassandra's look was a light smoky eye and a natural lip. Just breathtaking.

I am finally posting the pictures of Jennifer's wedding at Crystal Springs Resort. She had 2 hairstylists and 2 make-up artists (one was me:D) to accommodate her big bridal party. I did about 7 girls in total.

Some of the highlights for me was staring at her spectacular Chanel Shoes and snacking on Truffles..what can I say, it's the little things in life..lol

All of the girls were sweet and sassy and looked gorgeous!!! I had so much fun with these girls and despite the bride's nerves she was glowing!!! Enjoy all of these gorgeous faces!

Trinh's Trial with Jessica

This was a busy weekend for The Powder Bar. We had trials and weddings galore!

Trinh is getting married in September and had her hair and make-up trial with Jessica today.
She wanted everything VERY natural and subtle. Trinh has gorgeous cheekbones and such a youthful glow. Jessica did her hair half up with curls and accented the curls with a little bling. She has incredible shine to her hair.

Everything laid very soft on Trinh and Jessica said she was very pleased with the results. As you can see from the Before and After pictures, even a little make-up goes a long way:)

Backstage Highlights

About 1-2x a year I like to update my website with great bridal and formal pictures. We pulled together a photo shoot about a month ago in Long Island to do just that. With the help of an amazing photographer and friend

Jennifer's Trial

Jennifer came to me with about 3 weeks before her wedding. She had a trial elsewhere and wasn't thrilled. She described what she wanted as a "soft glow" She wanted her eyes to pop but be soft. I did golden earth tones with a little liner and some individual lashes. She had great skin so I just used a little Make-up Forever HD foundation and some concealer under the eye. We finished her lip with a bronze champagne glow. She saw it in the mirror and gave me a huge hug! I will be seeing her and her 9 girls in a few weeks. Can't wait!!

Melanie's Big Day

Meet Melanie..a very relaxed bride who DIDN'T have a make-up trial with me before the big day. Now most bride's would be freaking out right now but not Melanie..she had faith in me (Thanks Mel) and although I have done many brides without doing a trial I still get a tad bit nervous because I want the bride to be 120% satisfied. Well Melanie gave me a hot picture of J-Lo and basically said "GO!" and I did just that..dewy skin, smoky bronze eye, and a neutral lip. I also did her 2 sisters which were her maids of honor and a few lash applications. Although it was raining, these girls had amazing energy and spirit.

Here is a "before" and "after" picture of Melanie. She was walking around with her hair set in big rollers so I told her to do the typical "before" face. She was such a good sport.

Prom Mania!!!

Prom...wasn't life great then? I miss those days. Fortunately I get to re-live prom every year by making these gorgeous girls even better looking and share in their excitement. This year I did a few girls and they were kind enough to send me some pictures. This is so much fun for me because I get to to more funky color on the eyes and really go wild. For example, Erica had a bright orange dress so we did golds, oranges, and hot pink on the eyes. I love how experimental they were and I felt like a true artist. Here are the pics of some of my prom make-up. Can't wait for Prom 2010!

Robin takes the plunge:)

Here are the pictures of Robin's wedding we did a few weeks ago. It was a super early day (6:30am) but we only had 5 hours to do 5 updos, 3 blow outs, 3 flower girls, and 7 make-ups!!!
We did it with time to spare;) Everyone came out looking great and Robin was as calm as it gets. The weather was perfect and overall it was a very special day.

Erika's classic hair and make-up trial

Meet Erika..she is getting married in the fall and she wants her look to be timeless. Nothing too dramatic, just soft colors with an emphasis on the eyes. Lisa and I traveled to Hoboken to visit Erika and her mom who also had a hair trial. Everyone was so nice and outgoing and we all had a great time. One thing I will mention about Erika is that her skin was AMAZING! It was like porcelain. I just used a little Make-up Forever HD make-up and a dab of concealer under the eyes. We used some champagne colors on the eyes with a little shimmer to make them pop. We did some black liner just on the top and no liner on the bottom.

For her hair she wanted the classic french twist. Lisa played with different styles of french twist until they decided on the perfect one for her. We all agreed she needed a little bling to go with her veil so we will accent the twist with some hair jewelry on the day of the wedding.

Christine's wedding morning at the Doubletree Hotel went as smoothly as it gets. She had 10 girls that needed hair and make-up and they all had to be ready by 11. Myself plus 3 of my artists were knocking at her hotel door at 6am:) The girls were so much fun to work with despite the early wake-up call and Christine was as cool as a cucumber. The girls dresses were a gorgeous shade of red so we mostly did classic earth tones and warm pink lips to contrast such a bold color. Christine work her hair half up and half down and complemented it with some rhinestone hair clips. Her make-up consisted of mauve brown shadows with a slightly winged out black liner and of course..fake eyelashes.

A special thanks to my artists Lissa Marie, Nafsica, and Lisa for doing an amazing job. I posted some pics of Christine and her wedding party.

Anne is getting married!

Anne is such a great girl! I am so glad to be a part of her wedding day. She is going to be a beautiful bride. I did her trial along with her 2 bridesmaid's make-up at her home and we all had such a great time. I was there for over 4 hours and we all just lost track of time. Anne wanted DRAMA..real smokey eyes with loads of eyeliner and fake lashes. That kind of drama I can do:)

I chose a bronze palette with copper undertones to bring out her eyes. As you can see from her pictures they really stand out! I can't wait until her wedding in the fall:)

Life's a Beach

I had an opportunity to do a photo shoot on the beach for Bier Magazine which is an international beer magazine. We did 3 separate looks on 1 model. I brought along my husband and baby because it was the PERFECT beach day. Tiffany was our model and I did a real bronzed beach look on her. I have to admit..doing make-up on a bench on the boardwalk is a little difficult but Tiffany looked hot. Enjoy the pics!

Robin's Trial

Robin is getting married up in Vernon, NJ and had a huge wedding party that needed to be accommodated for her early wedding. No problem..we are use to getting up with the roosters for brides:) She had a great trial with Lisa and myself. She is from South Carolina so she didn't want anything over the top. Her hair had a tight natural curl but she ended up getting it blown straight and a wave was put back into it. She liked it soft so that is exactly what Lisa did.

The make-up was the tricky part. She NEVER wears it. She was reluctant to even wear foundation! I assured her it would look soft and natural. I just enhanced her natural look with soft browns on the eye and a mauve lip. She LOVED it. She made a back up appointment with a salon for the next day in case she didn't like her trial with us but needless to say she canceled that appointment and booked us right there. Thank you Robin!!

Christine's Trial

Christine was in a tough situation..her bridal hair and make-up artist bailed on her 3 weeks before her wedding <>. She called me frantic and I assured her we would take care of her with only weeks to spare. She came to see me immediately and with her friend Nikki and we all had a great time. Luckily for her I was available the weekend of her wedding because it was my anniversary weekend and I tried to leave that weekend open in case my husband decided to surprise me..(No such luck:P)

I snapped some pictures of the trial for you all to see. She brought inspiration pictures of Natalie Portman and Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl which we duplicated for her.
